Default Advice please....

I'm trying to buy this 1999 H1 for a killer deal but ran the VIN and everything checks out fine except this:

06/16/2009 ORANGE PARK, FL
Motor Vehicle Dept. TITLE (Title #:0091816804) (Lien Reported)

If there is a lien, it means that the lien holder should also hold the title, no?

I'm trying to buy it form an acquaintance of mine but he has the title in his hand and registered in his name.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanx

If he has the title in hand, there should be a place on it where the lien was signed off. Otherwise, I would go to the DMV and get info on the lienholder. Or better yet, tell your friend to do it. They might not give you the info. Tell him to straighten it out and then you will buy the truck. I had the same issue with a boat I bought from a friend. He handed me the clean title and when I went to register it, they said it had a lien. I had to call this place in L.A. only for them to tell me that they had no lien on the boat. But I had to drive down there and pay a notary for both me and the supposed lienholder to sign off before it could be registered. In my case, it was a clerical error somewhere along the line that cause me severe headaches and cost me money. Better check it up front before you put your money down.

yeah, you def dont want to get involved in something like that until the owner gets it all straightened out. I use to work in a motorcycle dealership and there were many customers that would come in with the same kind of issue and it takes a minute to get it all straightened out. The DMV has no tolerance for disputes like that. the owner needs to get it squared away.

Thank you for your advise. Everything got straightened out. There was no lienholder anymore. Computer error I guess. I take delivery of my H1 on Monday. Thanx again.
