Default bad brake caliper?

So I went to change my brake pads today, and ran into a bit of a snag...

I used a C clamp and the old pads to try to depress the pistons to fit the new pads. Two of the pistons went back with no trouble, but the other two wouldnt go back in. If the caliper were installed, its the two top pistons that are stuck, the bottom two were a piece of cake to depress.

Is this a sign that my calipers are toast, or am I doing something wrong here?

Thanks for any advice.

There shouldn't be 4 Pistons on 1 caliper. What look like 2 more are the guides. Just move the 2 to where the new pads are flush with the body of the other half.

Looks to be four to me also (two on each side). Changed out rotors and pads last weekend and one piston wouldn't move. I couldn't press it back into the caliper so couldn't fit the new pads in. Just put back the old pad for that side for now so I can move the truck out of the way. I just decided to purchase new calipers instead of rebuilding it to make things easier, at least I hope so.

I thought a 4 piston caliper was a little much to the point of not believing till I had to rebuild them!! 4xs the chance of failing I say, a little bigger rotor would have done the same trick!
