Default Rotted gas tank?

Hi all,
New to the forum. My mechanic is telling me that my gas tank is rotted due to a fuel leak.

When I completely fill the tank up fuel starts to spill out and pools on the ground underneath the rear driver-side door.

I thought that a hummer fuel tank couldn't rot out because it is plastic.
I am more inclined to think that maybe the filler neck is rotted?

I just wanted to know your thoughts. I sure don't want to get ripped off.

Thanks

You are right, the H2 gas tank is plastic, but the sending unit is metal. My sending unit rotted out and would **** gas everywhere while it was running. I changed it with a sending unit that is on Ebay for around 100 bucks. The filler neck is a rubber hose from the tank up into the fender well, so I doubt that it is your filler neck.
