I like the tread design and aggressive appearance of both the TOYO's and Coopers but not sure which is better.  Granted I will be using them the majority of the time on the street I would like to know which is more street friendly of the two.  I'll be getting 315/75/16's.  Thanks.

Just to give my opinion the Toyo MTs aren't that loud at all to me.  I can't really hear them over the radio or our conversation.  At highway speeds they get a little louder, but no where near unbareable.

Go with Toyo's, have had mine for about 6 months now, and I'm very happy with the performance, and treadwear of these tires!!! Here's a link to take a peek on the reviews on the Toyo M/T http://www.1010tires.com/TireReviews/Toyo_Open_Country_MT_tire_reviews.html

Toyo's (if those are the only two options) I like the coopers too but they are LOUD...at least they are on a 2006 f-350. My friend has them on his ford and he likes them, they seemed to do ok in the mud and snow but if ya gotta pee the vibration from the tires at highway speed will push it right out of you

Thanks to everyone for the feedback- I guess I will definitely be going with the Coopers due to the noise issues.

Is there another that you would put in front of the Toyo's?

I sell both of these tires in my business,  and I have the Toyo's on my rig.  The Cooper is a nice tire,  but the Toyo is unbeatable for ride comfort,  low noise level on the highway,  aggressive looks,  and actual functionality.  I think you will be very happy with the Toyo's.  Good luck!

do you mean going with the toyo's due to noise issues? Or do you want noisy?
Yes there are a few I would put in front of the toyo's...mainly because they are way overpriced...almost as baddly overpriced as bfg and PC. My first choice would have to be Mickey Thompson MTZ...very quiet and smooth tire that will keep up with or surpass toyos in off road traction (most conditions) They are siped so they are great on road in rain/snow/ice. I have turned a few guys on here onto the MTZ's and the are very happy with them. Call Jordan Tire for the best available price. I will get you a number later. MY other choice sould be right behind the mtz's and they are the Parnelli Jones Drit Gripz....very very quiet, way cool tread design and amazing on and off road traction. Only downside is that they do wear slightly faster than the mickey's. They are siped also so they are good on snow, ice, rain. You will be very pleased with either one IMO.

I typed too fast-- I will not go with the coopers due to their noise.  I'm probably going to go with the Mickey Thompson MTZ's thanks to your input.  Siping is important to me as I don't want trouble in the rain.  If the tires on your rig in the pic are MT MTZ's then I'll be very pleased- they look bad ass. You're a guru at this stuff, definitely.

P.S.-- H3Tiger, thanks for weighing in on this

No problem.  Good luck with your decision.  In a sense,  you will be going with Cooper after all if you go with the MTZ's.  Cooper owns Mickey Thompson.  The MTZ is a nice tire too... I've sold quite a few over the years.  I personally like the Toyo MT like I said,  but they are pricey as importkiller said.  Anyway,  let us know how you like the MTZ's when you get 'em.  They should give you good service too.  Take care...

I was looking on the Mickey Thompson site and it says that the 315/75R16's are for an 8" wheel.... will they fit on the stock rims or have you guys changed your wheels to accomodate them?
H3Tiger
4/1/2007 11:45:57 PM
They will fit on the stock wheel but not properly.  The problem is that the width of the stock wheel does not allow the tire to spread out like it would on say an 8 1/2" wheel....  the measuring width of the wheel on MT's website.  A tire's dimensions and effectiveness is directly related to the fitment on the wheel.  Granted,  1/2" is not a dramatic difference in width,  and the tire will technically mount fine on the stock wheel.  However,  the narrowness of the stock wheel can cause the tire to be "pinched" on the wheel and can cause premature wear in the center of the tire.  I know plenty of people probably have done this and seemingly have seen no ill-effects from it.  I am just pointing out a "possible" concern that you might want to be aware of.  Hope this helps...

FYI - The Cooper SST's and the Mickey Thompson MTZ are both manufactured by Cooper Tire at the same plant in Albany, GA. They use the same molding technology and are very simular tires.

Pro's and Con's:

Cooper's (including the MTZ) are lighter and generally softer, flex better when aired down and weight less.

The Toyo's are quieter, heavier, tougher, and balance better than any MT tire you'll likely run across.

They are within $25 of each other, depending on where you buy them, which is not enough for me to decide chiefly on price.

If you plan on running lots of smooth rocks and don't care about noise or gas mileage, the Cooper line may be a better bet. If you drive a semi-street queen or indulge in more well rounded off-roading, then the Toyo is a better overall tire.

Tires are like shoes, wear what you like, because if they don't feel right after you get them broke in, you'll get a chance to buy some more pretty soon.

If you think the Mickey Thompson MTZ's are much if any better than the Copper SST's then you should call a Cooper Tire Rep. I've been to the Albany plant, but what would I know...

As far as pricing, yea, they might be a little more than $25 apart, but that was off the top of my head. I can also give you quotes from different places where they are only $10 apart.

for a 285/75/16 Toyo i can quote you a tire for $194.22 what's your best price on the same size MTZ?

who the hell would want wimpy 285's?!?!?! I'll stick with my 315's....thanks. Your funny....please stick around here  I really couldn't care less what plant tour you have been on...do not impress me. I have personally owned or driven damn near every tire brand available in the usa, that is how I form my opinions, not from reading magazines or visiting a plant with my disposable camera  In my personaly experiance the noise difference between the mtz and the cooper mt is night and day....look at the tread design, completely different lug pattern. I don't care if your Uncle Charlie made both of em...they are a different tire. Cooper rubber also owns pro-comp...are they the same tire too?  BTW...I bought 4 315 MTZ for $880.....I highly doubt you canbeat that with toyos

How's this for a kick in the pants ImportKiller - You suggested that I call Jordan Tire, so I did- Trish quoted me 4 315 MTZ's for $845 shipped to NJ.....thanks for the hookup (and all of the advice)

thats cheaper than my dealer price
mine is 206.35 per tire for the  315/75/16 toyo mt
but the 206.35 is a delivered price to our shop
and 148.72 for the 315/75/16  toyo at

That price I quoted doesn't include shipping. The company, TIRE DEALS 4 LESS, is based just outside of Chicago, shipping to either coast is about $25 per tire.

for my address (NJ) shipping is $110 for regular freight + $70 if shipped to residential address. Let's see here....$818 +$110+70 = sorry I said anything

So ship them to whereever you're going to have them installed and save the $70.

Toyo: $204.55 ea X 4 = $818.20 + $110 = $928.20 / 4 = $232.05 ea.

MTZ: $880 (guess that includes shipping) / 4 = $220.00 ea.

$232.05 - $220.00 = $12.05 difference.

Turns out the Toyo's are LESS than $25 apart from the MTZ's...

Now let's get the thread back on track. There are other differences more important than $12 which a person should base their purchase on, i.e., weight, rating, tread design, balance, durability, flexability, wear, etc, etc, etc.
