Back in the 70’s and 80’s Japanese cars were junk as well as Korean cars were. American cars were not the best made either. The UAW was only worried about getting as many benefits for their members as possible and now it’s killing them because they can’t afford to pay those benefits or hourly wages.
 
I’ve done work in the local GM engine plant as a outside contractor and the work ethic there is horrible. The workers are more worried about getting overtime then doing their job. They have exercise equipment, horseshoe courts, volleyball courts, card games, all during work hours inside the plant! That’s not how it is in the Japanese plants. They improved their products and simply kicked our butts and gave the American people a better product. Their automobiles simply last longer and that’s why people buy their cars.
Still won’t buy a foreign car or truck because even though it may be “made in the USA“ it’s still a foreign company and profits are going overseas.
 
The problem goes way deeper then this. The government could have closed the border and not allowed the foreign cars into the country and the UAW would have continued to make junk cars and trucks. A little competition actually made the American auto makers improve their products. This discussion could go on forever because everyone has their own point of view. This happens to be mine.

since i started this I guess that means i'm the one being called a kid? Being born before Viet Nam war started I'd hardly call myself a kid, and just for all your info "jap" is a derogatory remark against japanese people termed during WW2, it's the same as a KKK guy calling an African American a "edit by IK"

since i'm pretty much partial to the whole foreign-US debate (while i'd like to buy American [and i clearly just did, with the H3], i'll buy whatever i feel to be the best deal and best-made), i'll say that the thing i find kind of amusing is that the same people who claim that the term "Jap crap" (or whatever other phrase - it doesn't really matter which) isn't offensive are the same ones who get offended by people who say "American cars are crap."  take a step back and realize you're both doing the same thing.

Being an American citizen and a son of a former Linden NJ GM plant worker and being a former GM mechanic myself...of course I prefer American...I like to support my country...thanks

i agree; i like to support the US whenever possible also.  if it comes down to accepting an inferior product, i won't do it, however.  that being said, i think US car manufacturers are definitely heading in the right direction as of recent years, for the most part.  there is still some catching up to do, but i was more than happy (and proud) to buy a US-branded car that i feel is solid.

Alphadogg:  I agree with everything you said, except that jap crap lasts longer.    Seen anybody doing restos on 1975 Civics, you know, the ones with recycled steel??
 
 
I am no fan of the UAW, but not all UAW workers are loafers, but the bad apples do spoil the bunch.  That's another story, they have been busy pricing their labor out of the market for years.  Competition is what our market has always been based upon, but how about a level playing field???
 
 
Ok, so now that the starter of this thread got his 3 smashed, guess we won't be hearing how that hummer picker upper works out.

Face it, you don't get it.  As far as I'm concerned you are welcome to stay.  If you are of Japanese decent and take offese with my use of the term, I appoligize and misunderstood your sensitivity on the issue.  However, jap crap is a term refering to products .....made by jewish american princesses. 

i'm not trying to start trouble and I did find your definition in the dictionary.com site of a jewish american princess, but are they making cars now? I believe and it may be only my opinion but it was used in reference to Japanese made cars and if you see the following as jap also has the jewish definition please n
