A new type of teaching theory called "Whole Language" for reading came out largely in the school systems during 1990s based on this theory...that people learn to read by "site words" and repetition of seeing these words, as well as knowing their meaning. This meant throwing out the  vowel/consonnant (strictly phonics) teachings (for which I somewhat disagree with.)  This does explain though why almost everyone is able to read this with ease...the words are memorized in our minds basically.
