well,we had to go back to the drawing board, the first rack just wasnt strong enough and gunner wanted it bigger,so i went this route,1"tubing and it will have expanded stainless steel metal fo the bottom,it is big enough to fit over a 35" tire and right now will hold 60lbs,as thats how much my kid weighs, let me know what ya think

That looks great and I am always looking for another way to bring stuff I don't really need with me on my trips  .

The only question is - will the door stand up to the torque applied by such a long lever? A 35" tire is sort of like a 17 1/2" crowbar applied to the middle of the door, this is an even longer one. Driving around with a cooler would apply some of the force downwards, but also away from the door - like a can opener. Maybe some sort of strap over the top so that it can't bounce away from the door?
Anyway, it does look cool and I hope a I am wrong cause I'd like to have one of those myself.

Flex on the door panel has been a big concern for anyone who has built/used one of these things.
(or anyone putting a 35 inch tire and wheel on that spare tire mount)
So far, no one seems to have suffered any damage from using one of these racks. I've
seen folks on several other forums load 'em up with everything but the kitchen sink and
claim to have not had any problems. Personally, I don't plan on putting a bunch of weight
on this one and will try to have the load oriented as close to the door as possible. It's not
just the door panel, you also have to worry about the hinges and possible misalignment
of the door itself. (I wonder if that is why AMSTAR quit selling their version of it)

This thing is strictly for bulky yet lite items, stinky, muddy, wet crap that you don't want INSIDE the rig on a trip.
Packed out trash, fish coolers, recovery gear, cooler loaded with a suitable amount of adult beverages...etc.

Plus it's not something I want to leave on all the time. Everything but the main support can be removed by
simply turning a few knobs and can be stored in the barn.

Once Mike gets it dressed out and we get a coat of Black Krylon Hammer Finish on it...Should look really nice.

this should really be the cats meow,as far as load,i dont see any flex on it when i apply pressure,it bolts to the top two bolts on the door, and those are pretty sturdy,i dont think he will have any problems with this

Damn, I guess I'll have to let the family inside even if I do get one of these.

Why the white metal (SS???) horizontal bar at the top mount bolts.  Lost me on that part, I've been with ya on the rest.  The one inch tube looks cool, but how about one inch square aluminum tube up top??? for the rack, I like the weight at less than 0.30#/ft. and you do not have to bend it unless that is the look you want.  Just constructive harrassement.

I like it guys.  I like the Rust-Oleum Hammered paint better Gunner,  long dry time, really long, but after about 2 weeks that stuff is damn near like powder coat.  IMO tougher than the Krylon.   KUDOS on the project.

The horizontal is for some additional supports that are not pictured.

Here is the reason for the round tube:

The round matches the SMA, the future roof rack and tail light guards..........Square just didn't fit the overall aesthetic I was going for.

Trying to match the finish on the SMA as well...That is wy the hammered...Couldnt remember if it was Krylon or Rusto---

Need to hit their web pages and do a little research.

Here is a possible roof rack choice.......May still be too tall for the garage..But it is light wt and easily removable for storage.

looks sweet!!! If you could make one the entire width of the truck I'd get one to strap the mother in law to

that could cause a weight issue

well, here it is,all but paint,i added some material to the support so i dont need any down riggers,as you can see,my boy got on it,it moved 1/8 inch, which i was fully expecting, with 150 lbs on it,it moved 1/4 inch, but it is made w/ a 3 degree andgle,so 60+lbs levels it out almost,i just need to cut off those straps on the main bracket.this came out sweet,as soon as gunner gets with me on paint,it will be done, all in all i will have about 150 total in material and supplies

i chose to go with no down riggers due to when i tried them, they wanted to push that strap into the door, and thats just bad news,so i added material where it would benefit it the most, and it only attaches with 2 hand nuts,i made a bracket that will slide over the top of the main bracket, and then put two nuts, just to hold it,and it works great
