I will do my best to make the outing. I will forward to a few more people.
I hope Ghostrider is happy I am on the site

He has been on my case for a while to join.
Just a few words of advice: 1) Voucher system will be in place 2) If this is a CLUB function the State of Michigan will require a usage permit. (Big Hint) If this is just a group of friends meeting at the dunes then it is no extra fees or paperwork.
Thanks
Ghostrider

Holy crap! I can't believe you actually joined!
Good call on the club thing...no name! Just some trucks in the dunes on the same day. (thats a pretty good underground name)
Now we just have to get jaybird over here.

Nope. This isn't a club anything.

The reason I bring it up is that it only takes one person in the group to say "he is in charge" Next thing you know you have a million DNR officers and they are all interrogating you for 45 plus minutes and wasting valuable Dune time.
FYI
Ghostrider post a few Pictures from the 19th you can even put up the unedited version

DNR officers? I'm not sure who those are. Why are they that anal? So what if a club comes there. It's a public beach isn't it?

Department Of Natural Resources. They are the law/park rule enforcement officers, for the Dunes, which is a MI State Park Off-Road Vehicle Area.
We are all just a bunch of friends and knuckheads who happened to meet up for some fun in the sand. Nobody is in charge of nothing. I have never been hassled by any of them, just follow the rules, and it's all good.

This could be a good one!
Yes........cell phone service is not good at Silver Lake. I believe it is Sprint and Nextel that work the best, if I remember right, they have "the" tower in the area.

That's not too bad. From the look of those pictures though it seems like a congested place.

Silver lake is a great place to wheel. I am not stating that the DNR is bad not at all they are doing their job. When a group comes into the dunes you need to pay a group fee on top of all the permits.
They do alot of good in the dunes if you follow the rules and do not need help you will never see them.
After Ghostrider gives me the tutorial on posting pictures I will show you a few good brackets for the flag.

OK cool. I just got the impression from your post that if we even say anything that had a reference to an association we'd be slapped with a pile of paperwork and bills to pay. How long is the process to get in? We aren't going to be sitting at the entrance filling out papers and waiting in lines to get in are we?

That is correct if some one states we are a group many questions are raised hence the 45 min interview (Do not crack under the pressure). If I bring Harvey I will get the flag anyway.

How many of us have a Hummer Forums sticker on our truck?
I do. Would that raise concern?

Mine came off long ago. I was going to put a new one on, but I guess I'll refrain.

I'll bring a couple/few flag brackets with me (made from some scrap steel channels) for those who might need one and get there late.
This weekend I'll spend some time and PM/email the rest of the MI gang to make sure they all got the invite.

hey whats up all... Bill nice pic of my truck there :-)
anyhow... with the Dunes being a ORV park, the typical rules for "group" size do not apply... you can show up with 100 people, as long as they can all get in, and still be legit cause you are paying to get into the park.... you need a Michigan ORV sticker, Flag that is 10 ft tall and a state park sticker.... the ORV and state park sticker can be picked up at the booth at the entrance... the flag can be picked up at several locations prior to entry....
HOWEVER, being there intrest in July 12, a saturday, you would be required to obtain vouchers PRIOR to getting in on the weekend... this is why, when Rick and I lead the group to the dunes from HH06 we did it on a monday and a friday.... I would recommend a friday to go play if you intend to gather a group of folks.... say the 11th an then you can all get vouchers for the 12th if you needed to.... its just one vacation day from work which should be easy to get....
Here is the details on the vouchers.....
------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365_15070-34760--,00.html ORV VOUCHER SYSTEM
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) developed a voucher system during the 2000 use season as a tool to manage the long lines of Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) users waiting to enter Silver Lake State Park on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays.
There are two types of vouchers: Dune Ready Vouchers and Parking Lot Vouchers. Dune Ready Vehicles are those that enter the Silver Lake State Park ORV Area from public highways and go straight into the sand dune off-road area without the need for the parking lot / staging area. Parking Lot Vouchers are for those who require a staging or parking area for their tow vehicle and /or trailer. Both types of vouchers are free to park visitors and are distributed from the Off-Road Vehicle Voucher Center located at the corner of Fox and Ridge Roads, about ¼ mile east of the ORV Area entrance. The Voucher System season:Vouchers will be handed out starting mid-May, at 12 noon on Friday, two weeks prior to the Memorial Day weekend and then continuously through the summer on weekends/holidays until the Sunday following Labor Day weekend.Voucher distribution times:The voucher distribution point on Fox Road will open at 12 noon on Fridays for

Guess I know why we don't have any parks around here. Sounds like a PITA.

well.... the voucher system is only in play between memorial day and labor day.... the rest of the year tends to see less "vehicluar" traffic so they don't require it... they generally have lines, long lines, to get in on the weekends.... this was their best solution to limit the number of vehicles on the dunes, of course all for saftey.... now if they could just keep the knuckle-heads out we would be that much better off!!
HummerGuy

That does sound like a PITA. How long does this whole process take if you get there at a reasonable time, and what time would that be? At the Badlands, you just walk in, pay, and go into the park. You don't need any permits or anything, but that's also because it's private property.
It just sounds like an awful lot of BS to drive in the sand.

5/2/2008 5:36:14 AM
if you schedule this run on the 11th... a friday.... you won't need to do any of that stuff with the vouchers....
the park is State Owned, so they run the show.... they require a ORV sticker which is 16.25.... then a state park sticker which for instate residents is $6 / day or $24 / year..... the flag, which can be used multiple times runs around $20 plus if you need a bracket another $15 or so....
for me, I have a state park sticker / ORV and flag, so I just drive through and go play..... so its a one time per season fee....
but again, I would recommend going on friday if you want a group to go play.... I think they close around 9 / 10 PM....

I have a flag already and a good mounting place for it so that's not a problem.
I can probably take Friday off and head up there and just stay the night, then come back home Saturday.
What do you think guys? I think Rich already took that weekend off as a weekend vacation though.

If it's on a friday, I'm out.

What a real PITA this process is just to be able to play in the sand.

Friday would be better for getting in as a group. It will also not be as many people in the dunes.

5/2/2008 6:21:11 AM
Yea, Friday won't work for me. But don't hold up the show on my account. Do what's best for the group and I if I can work it out then I will see you.

Yo.................Hello, the date is the 12th, SATURDAY. The voucher system is a non issue. I will be there Friday, I can pick up up to two vouchers for others who want to show up Saturday, or very late Friday. Anyone can pick up vouchers for friends, family as long as they have their full name and license plate number.
Talk about freekin people out with too much information.
Any other Friday arrivals can get extra vouchers for Saturday. AND, the voucher center is open at 7:am Saturday morning, so
just get their early and no biggy. They ain't gonna run out of vouchers, everyone can get in, some might......MIGHT, have to wait until 11:am to get in, or go to the back of the long line and get in that way.
I been doing this since before the voucher system 30 years ago, it's a piece of cake. See you all SATURDAY, July 12.
