Hi,
I am new here and on the verdge of buying a 2006 Hummer H3. I have a few questions, if you don,t mind helping out?? I currently own a 2000 dodge dakota quad cab. It needs alot of work, its paid off, and it totally is killing me in the gas.. 8-10 mpg around town.. So I stopped at a local used car dealer to check out a Chevy Silverado, nice truck. But its also a v8, bad on gas, and actually I rarely hardly ever use it to haul anything. So I noticed this dark blue H3 Hummer sitting there. I can tell you , its an eye catcher... I was reluctant to test drive it, big tires, etc thought it would ride very rough.. Well, I said, "what the hell" and I took it for a ride... Let me tell you, it was awesome!! Quiet, handled great, rode like a cadillac... So now I cannot get the vehicle outta my head!! lol

OK, Here is the deal, it has 28,000 miles, its a 2006, all chromed out.. Excellant shape.. The dealer is asking 22,900..  He is giving me 8,000 for my truck?? Should I do it??? Tell me more about the vehicle

The 2006 has 3.5L Inline 5.  This was upgraded to 3.7L in 2007 to give a 10% boost in HP and torque.  There were a few other changes made after 2006.  Your gas mileage will probably be about 15-16 mpg (mixed city-freeway).  Others here will know more about the 2006 model.  It seems like there was a suspension and engine problem that had to be worked thru waranty.

Some had a head problem but it was handled under warranty. there was also a steering shaft issue that was handled under warranty. I believe GN issued a TSB in both cases. Awesome truck. My brother gets up to 20 MPG on the highway and 15-16 around twon in his. He also enjoys driving it more than anything he has ever owned and that counts for a few mpg all by itself.

Howdy;  I would say do a vehicle history on it if its serial number is before the code: 68287591.  (all 2006 in N. America start w 68).  Warranty for the heads was extended, the rest is 50k.

The new hardened cylinder heads on engines manufactured after March 31, 2006 where a change made by GM due to a batch of bad Atlas engine heads.  Engines manufactured before that date COULD have the cylinder head problem. However, NOT ALL WILL have the problem.

Welcome and good luck.

Thanks for the help. I did a vehicle check on it, cost 25 bucks, but oh well.. Nothing came up, but it was a leased vehicle, with one owner.. Nothing else showed on the report.. I also called my insurance company, gonna stay the same as my truck insurance?? Nice there..  I have to children, one is 5 the other 8, and I think there is enough room in it for them ... I am hoping to get my payments at 300 a month? Not sure, but I am hoping... I still cannot believe how nice it rode.. It was awesome!!

Doc Olds, I dunno if I read your reply right. Are you saying the warranty for the head has been extended? Does that mean for all '06s?

Yours 68164641; cut off # 68287591
Call a hummer dealer and ask them to pull the records and see if they have a warranty work record. Sometimes they can pull them up by the VIN. I tried to call and check for you but my Service guy is on the phone right now.

Oh yeah, it's a good looking truck. Sorry, I'm at work also and got a little side tracked. I meant to tell you that. LOL

I'm sure it's fine, we had an Superior Blue 06 and it was a great little truck!

What do you think about the price? Does hummer offer an extended warranty? I am thinking of offering them 21,000 for the hummer, plus give me 8,000 for my dakota..

The price seems good for the H3, but they always screw you on your trade in.

Run some figures through Kelley Blue Book, and see what similar condition Dakota's are selling for on Autotrader.

The warranty should be automatically transferred to you, but make sure.

Offer them your figure on the H3, but don't let them yank your chain on your trade in value.

If they do a little, get them to throw in some accessories that you like.

Yea, i actually looked at kelly blue book, they are giving me more on my trade than what the blue book says it is worth.. I just want to keep my payments at 300 a month or close to it.. I got my insurance all lined up, etc.. Just waiting to make a deal.. The extras, well I have alot of plans for that later.. LOL

Like I said, I owned a dodge truck, chevy truck, a chevy blazer and a dodge dakota.. The hummer h3 rides 100% smoother and nicer than all of them.. Plus I will get better gas mileage. My dodge dakota has a 360 in it, I get 8-10 MPG.... Bad!!

Thats not a bad looking little Hummer, if you like that much "bling".  The big chrome piece on the hood is nasty looking in my opinion.  Also, if this is the first H3 that you have driven I would look around for one that has the Luxury package and/or the Adventure package.  The one you are looking at has neither.  The Luxury package gives you heated leather seats, which are so very nice on a cold winter day, and a better sound system.  The Adventure package gives you the locking rear diferential, bigger tires and the lower geared transfer case.  The one you are looking at is pretty much a base vehicle.  And that's fine, I just wanted you to know about some of the options that they come with as it sounds like you are new to the H3's.

BTW...This forum rocks and the people here are always willing, and able, to answer questions and help you out.

According to my dealership:

-Cylinder Head was replace on your truck Jan 18, 2008
-Rear Washer Motor Dec 2005
-Back up Lamp
-Lower gear shift assembly
-Tire Pressure Monitor

It still has 1 open Recall on it: Vehicle Jack Replacement

It was originally sold at Greenwood Hummer in Youngstown Ohio

Nothing serious and your Head is good!

Hope this helps

A 60 month loan should run you around $267/month.

$21000 for the H3.
$8000 for trade in on the Dakota.
$13000 difference.
6.5%(guestimate) sales tax on $13000= roughly $850
So, $13850 @ 6% for 5 years is equal to $267/month.

You can probably get better than 6% interest rate right now, too.

Good Luck!!

Yea, we still have not worked out the details. He is waiting for the bank.. He told me worst case is 370 month, but at 18 finance rate? Why he did that, no idea??? But if i get under 7 % finance, I should be good to go.. I hope this works out, cause like I said, the SOB ran like a champ...

18%??  I would find my own financing at that rate.

Dealers are bending over backwards to get any deal they can right now. When I got my new 08 I told him that I would not be going over 350 and that was it. He said "I will see" Next day he called, with all the accessories already on the truck I wanted and said here it is, come down with the down payment and you can take it now. Got away at $350 a month + sales tax. Insurance is not bad at all with it.

What is your down payment? Is it just your trade in amount? If so, that seems just about right ( maybe a little bit over as I ran over some figures quick), but an 18%? Is that through GMAC or an independant finance company? That trade in almost sounds too good to be true. Dakotas do not have a great resale value, so most dealers look to put a minimum into it to get it and either A) wholesale it or B) try and sell it. If it has problems like you said, I think the dealer is getting screwed. I would take the deal and run.
