I did a 600 mile trip this weekend in the H3 Alpha. Orange County to Laughlin, NV to West Covina and back to Orange County. 130 miles of this was on the Mojave Trail in the high desert. ( deep sand, some ascent/descent, Mojave river and water crossings salt lake bed, etc ) I averaged right at 15 mpg for the entire trip. I thought that was great.

I have 4800 miles now and I'm averaging 17.1-17.5mpg.  I think that is pretty darn good for a combo of city and highway driving.  If I took a long trip, I might be able to get it up to 19mpg.
BTW, this is on regular unleaded 87 octane.  It will probably help when I get my first oil change on the 1st.....

Mine went to poo when I added all the weight of the skids/sliders/tires, and did a T-bar lift. Went from about 16 to about 11. You also have to figure that if you added larger tires, they are throwing the speedo as well as the odometer off. You are actually traveling more miles than what the odometer is showing, so calculating miles to gallon is tough. It may show you've gone 220 miles since last fill up, but you've actually gone 250.

220 miles/ 20 gallons= 11 MPG
250 miles/ 20 gallons=12.5 mpg

Sounds like except for a few with lead feet the Alphas don't do to bad. Mine is right in the range on the window sticker.

One thing to remember here is the EPA fuel estimates are average estimates as stated on your window sticker.

13 mpg city (average) - the expected range for most drivers is 10 to 16 mpg.
16 mpg highway (average) - the expected range for most drivers is 13 to 19 mpg.

It also states Combined Fuel Economy as 14 mpg and says “Your actual mileage will vary depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle.”

You're painting with a pretty wide brush when you say you're within the range on the window sticker.

Yesterday I took a little road trip about half interstate and half country roads, not much stop & go driving and my fuel mileage was better then it’s ever been. My speed was between 80/55mph and I got 15 mpg.

Because of the modifications I’ve made to my truck I’ve seen my mileage go from 14.7mpg to 11.6mpg. But I was hoping I my mileage might improve a little since installing the custom dual exhaust and this could be an indication that it has.

Think about what Voodoo said.

"Would I like to get 25-30 mpg? You bet. Would I give up my Hummer for it? HELL NO!"

I agree 100%

And it would appear that everyone is within the range indicated. That was my point. The new mileage estimates are better than the old ones. And mine is consistently between the 13-16 range so at least I was not unpleasantly surprised.

I am foreign car guy. My last SUV was a 4-Runner. Now that I have had my first H3. Its a
Awesome vehicle. Quiet at 70, great sound system, the sun roof is huge, plenty of room
The H3 is really cool and I get reasonable fuel economy with the 5 cylinder engine and moderate driving. Yeah it's a little expensive, BUT worth every penny when Im Ridin High in my H3 until a H2 pulls up next to me and looks down.

I found great reviews at http://www.buyingadvice.com/

Check out this custom electric Hummer!

On my very first tank of gas, I got 12.1 mpg while driving without really thinking about gas mileage. The next tank, i deliberately drove as smoothly and calmly as I could (all stop and go, city driving) and always kept the engine under 2000 rpm, just to see how much I could eek out of it. This netted 14 mpg. I have yet to drive any meaningful distance in the new tank... ehm, sorry, H3 so I don't yet know what the highway mileage is.

use 87 octane instead of 93 and i guarantee you will get better gas mileage, using higher octane on a vehicle not meant for it is not good for mileage or the valves.
What??  Now more octane causes bad valves and worse mileage??  OMG!!  What is this world coming to??

Never would have thought it would help, but I stopped using discount fuels and started using Shell 87 octane.  Since the change, the average increase over the past few fill-ups has been very close to 1 1/2 MPG's.  The reason for my changing to the more expensive fuel (3-5 cents per gallon) has been the recent information referencing discount fuel companies supplementing their gas with 10% ethanol.  By law, the oil companies do not have to inform the consumer of this, and has now proved to drive MPG's downward up to 30%.

So they cut the fuel 10%, cut efficiency 30% and that is supposed to help? Must be the hand of government on this.

Actually, the only role the government played in this one is allowing the individual oil companies to put additives in the fuel without telling the consumer.  This one is all about the discount suppliers making a buck!

Well, they do know what's good for us better than we do. Right?

Absolutely!! All we can do is not set foot in their doors, buy our pops & snacks elsewhere, & always use that VISA card to purchase their fuel so they dont get off with that 4% upcharge as well!!

I never buy gas at those places.

I've checked my last two tanks and get right at 16. My H2 gets 12.5, so somethings wrong to get only 11. I drive aggressively also - 75 & 80 on the highway here in Texas.

I actually feel bad for the many of the local gas station owners (not necessarily the off-brand, cheap gas places). As Wrongway alluded to, they make their money off of what you buy in the store, not at the pump. They are not getting rich off of the recent spike in gas prices since they only make a few cents per gallon. And, if you use your Visa, they pay a percentage in fees, let's say 3%. 3% of $3.50 is about 10.5 cents per gallon - and that's actually greater than the profit margin they have on each gallon of gas. So they lose money when you purchase only gas.

ExxonMobil - that recent $10.5 BILLION profit was disappointing according to the news articles. The big guys and the Middle East - that is who is getting are money, not the little guy. So if you like your corner gas station guy, go in and buy a bag of chips and a Coke every now and then and help them survive.

I'm getting between 14.5 and 18. I put Mobil 1 in it and it seemed to get better afterwards. I've heard getiing the restrictive exhaust off of it and doing a free flowing system we' ll possibly get up to 20!! Any thoughts on that? I've been looking at the Gibson system.
