when going up long grades, at highway speeds (65-70), the temperature creeps up into the 225-230 range. this is with nothing being towed, just the bus on its own. outside temp has always been in the 80s, really low humidity. around town or on flat ground the temp stays in the 190-200 degree range. could the winch/cradle be blocking enough airflow to the bottom of the radiator to cause this, or is it normal? usually when i'm going up those grades i'm heading into the foothills to explore the nat'l forest trails, and don't want to go without the winch or **** with putting it on when i get there. anybody in So Cal or AZ see this as well, or should i stop being a puss and not worry about it? i'm heading to the coast with the camper in a month, and the hiway between redding and eureka is pretty steep with minimal level areas. i'd rather not burn up after 5 hours of driving. all other times the temp stays steady, so I'm sure the thermostat is working.

this sounds VERY strange...is your your hummer stock?

stock except for the tires, which could be part of it too. not lifted, but i've got 37" tires, which i know make it work a bit harder. i'm leaning toward the winch, w/vinyl cover, blocking the bottom of the radiator. i'm going to try the same route without the winch to see if i get the same results. i just won't go off the pavement on that trip, cuz when i don't have it is when i know i'll need it.

I have to venture out and say that the winch/cradle is probably where your problem is coming from....Granted I don't live anywhere near the mountains, but I did drive roughly 3 hours yesterday in 100 degree weather and the temp didn't rise above 200....However, I am no expert and would probably tell you to call your Hummer service dealer, or one you know of, and I'm sure they could tell you more....Damn it's hot down here!

seems like summer finally arrived here yesterday too, we hit mid 90's and the 105's will be here soon. but it's a dry heat. took the winch off last night, i had noticed when taking my daughter to the airport on wednesday that the temp crept up doing 70 on a flat hiway. i'm going to blow off half the work day today, and make a run up the hill to see how it goes. also took that little chrome window dressing off the lower intake grill. i just hate calling the dealer here, they don't answer questions, just say to bring it in so they can charge me $78 to drive it around and say they can't duplicate it. thanks for all the input, have a safe holiday . .

does that have electric fans or clutch fans?

I talked to my service guy the other day and he said that 225-230 range would be ok...especially with the weather....I asked him about the winch and he said that it should not pose a problem....hope that helps...

i removed the winch, and it still creeps up past normal, so it doesn't seem to be the issue. but, at least the bottom grill in now unobstructed. i've been thinking about going to an electric fan upgrade, i'm stock right now. or is there a replacement blade that's a bit more agressive and pulls more air when idling? yesterday it went above normal on a flat road, 65-70 mph, a/c at 60 degrees, outside around 95, so i'm hoping this is normal and i'm getting twisted up for nothing. my local dealer only tells me to "bring it in", i'd rather not do that.

I work at a Hummer Dealership myself...If you want, you can call my service guy and tell him what's going on...I promise you that he is not going to ask you to bring it in...He can probably tell you what the issue is over the phone (or if it is an issue at all)... (214)366-7051...His name is Byron and mine is Scott...Hope that helps...

i would like to know what the final problem was/is?

i called scott's buddy in texas, and he said it's normal. it's been in the low 100's here the past few days, but i haven't been on the freeway in it. it's still acting normal on street level driving. i had some stupid meeting in SanFran yesterday, and didn't make my dealership appt. figure i'll save $100 and wait to schedule another one
does anybody know if there's an oil cooler option for these things? or is there already one on it? my old chp mustang had one, and that thing never got hot.
still can't upload a pic, says the feature is disabled or i don't have sufficient permission. please mommy, tell me what i have to do to post a pic. . . .

Yes, you could be blocking the air flow. One test is to try it without the wench. One main problem could be the fan. The fan clutch should disengage to spin faster for better cooling. Ask your dealer to perform an analysis of the system.
