fuel door

I purchased an oem fuel door and while trying to push hard enough to make flush with fender I cracked the black plastic ring around fuel door between chrome face and fender. Any idea how to remove fuel door without damaging fender and when new fuel door arrives is there a trick to getting it flush with fender so there's not a gap?
