I've noticed a noise over the past month or so in the front-end, more-so on the drivers side. The noise happens primarily when hitting small bumps in the road (when coasting, braking, or accerlating). I can hear a light clunking sound kind of like something is loose (in the suspension). My main concern is that I can feel it in both pedals. Its frustrating b/c it doesn't always happen. Usually occurs after I've been driving about 10 miles. I took it to the dealer and, of course, it didn't do it for them. So, they told me to bring it back next time it does. Haven't taken it back yet b/c I want to do a little research to see if anyone is having the same problem, so I can make a suggestion to them. I've read stuff about the CV joint, but my problem doesn't sound quite that severe. I did read something about the front body mounts that sounded very similar to my situation. Of course, it doesn't help that I know nothing about cars...
So, I leave it to you guys...the experts. Any ideas?
As always, thanks in advance for the help/advice.

Sounds like a trend for the H3..... And I think that GM is trying to sort it out fast. Read my below post to another Forum member.......
"It is most likely your stearing shaft making the noise. Mine does it after the
vehicle warms up. You can feel the light thumping or rattle in the break and gas pedal. The dealer told me it was a design or component problem that GM is working on a replacement shaft for the H3. If you crawl under the H3 on the drivers side and grab the stearing shaft above the nuckle (careful things are hot in that area) you can replicate the sound by trying to wiggle your shaft (keep your mind out of the gutter.... not what I'm talking about). I talked to the dealer here in Houston about 4 weeks ago and he told me at that time that the improved replacement parts were not yet available. let us know if this is the same problem you are having. Mine is a 2007 model."

After a recent off roading trip I noticed a knocking noise when I go over bumps also. I noticed my grill was kind of loose and my headlights are also loose, so I am assuming when I go over bumps the loose grill and/or headlights are knocking around making the noise. My first impression when I heard it was that it may be the suspension, but I cant notice anything else loose except for the grill and headlights. I called Hummer today to make an appt, I am waiting to hear back. I'll post what the problem really is after I get it back.

Thanks Fever. That sounds exactly like my problem, especially the part about the vehicle doing it after its warmed up and the thumping in the pedals. Its extremely hard to describe it to the dealer w/out replicating it or sounding like a complete moron. I'm planning on taking it in soon. I'll mention the stearing shaft to them. Please let me know what you find out.
Mfish, I know my grille/headlights aren't loose. Plus, I've only taken it light off-roading once since I've owned it. So, mine shouldn't be wear and tear...wish I could say it was though. Sounds more legit. Ha! Please let me know as well.
Thanks for the help!

Just got back from the dealer here in Dallas (actually Plano) and you were right, Fever.
Here's the story: Its hot here today and for what seems to be that reason, the rattling/thumping was very active. So, I stopped by the dealer at lunch. Before I could even finish describing the problem, the service dude was telling me other symptoms I was experiencing. Fortunately, he was right on and told me that I (actually Fever

) was right about the steering shaft. He also mentioned that I was his 4th customer in the last week or so that came to him w/ this problem. So, the good news is that its not detrimental to the operation of the vehicle AND they are going to replace it. The sorta bad news is that the new shaft parts are on back order. Apparently, this is becoming a problem w/ the 2007's although GM hasn't issued any kind of recall. Now, I'm just waiting for a phone call.
Oh yeah, I also asked if all 07's will eventually have this problem as my parent's just bought 2 months ago. He said it just depends on when the unit was built. So, BE WARE!
I'll post an update once I'm all fixed up. Hope this helps shed some light on the issue...and thanks again!

Guess I don't have to worry about that problem since I have on 06...but I was lucky enough to get the head/valve problem

Thats funny someone mentioned this, I noticed this for the first time yesterday. Get a slight clicking or knocking in both pedals and the steering wheel while driving home yesterday. '06 H3. Should I take it in?

Also make sure all of the skid plate bolts are tight.

Wow, this was the thread I needed! I had this problem on day one with the vehicle but, as said above, it's been intermittent. Now I know what to tell the dealer to get this addressed.

Just wanted to post an update. I dropped my 3 off this morning to get the intermediate steering shaft replaced. The service guy told me they just got an email from GM stating that the shafts are still in redesign and are on back order. However, they had ordered one for me last week (dunno if I'm getting a crappy one or what). I should have it back by the EOD, so I'll let yall know if it corrected the problem.
Anyways, it sounds to me like GM is expecting this problem to become more frequent. So, keep your ears and feet peeled

This is all the H3- 07 models only or 07 H3x only?

Dunno. I asked the dealer if this should be expected from all 07s as my parents bought one about a month after me. He said it just depends on when the vehicle was made. I'm assuming he means there were certain batches that got this particular part. Not sure if it varies b/w models. I have an 07 adventure, and a buddy of mine has the same problem with his 07 luxury (made around the same time). Can't tell you about the Xs. Please keep in mind, he never specifically said this was a major problem. He just said it was an escalating problem. I just wanted to share the fact that they're getting communications from HQ about it.
On a side note, the loaner they gave me has the updated armrests. I have to admit, I like them...a lot!

I have the same issue ( i started a thread about it the other day). I guess I'll wait to see if you guys get rid of the problem with the solution you've been given before I take mine in. Mine is 2007 with 1500 miles on it.
Please keep us informed.

Ok, just got off the phone with the dealer and got more info. Apparently, GM is working on a redesign of the intermediate steering shaft as we speak. Its supposed to be available within the next few weeks. He said that about 15-20% of the 07 H3s are having this problem, for what reason he did not specify. The new one they just finished putting on my 3 is basically a newer verison of my old part

as they obviously don't have any redesigns yet. He said there's a chance this one might have the same problems, but that there's a chance I won't have any problems with it. Of course, he qualified his statement by saying that if it does mess up again, then to bring it back and they'll replace it (again) w/ the redesign.
I definately don't feel any better about this...kinda feel like I went to the Dr. and heard I could live anywhere b/w 6 mths to 60 yrs, but at least they're honest...Guess I'll wait 4 weeks, then go get my redesign. Hope this helps!

I've got the '07 H3 and had been hearing/feeling the popping noise in the gas/brake pedals. It's gotten a little more frequent this past week. Calling Sewell tomorrow to set up time to drop it off. Thanks for posting on this much easier to tell them what's going on with it now.

absolutely! glad i could help call the problem out. although, i was given the solution by a fellow member

just an fyi about sewell, they told me they wont have the redesigned shaft for about 3 or 4 weeks. i would try to schedule something now around their expected delivery date. let me know when you get the new shaft as i plan on taking mine back regardless. also, make sure you tell them to align it once replaced. mine's off now b/c of it. i asked if that was something to worry about, they told me no...they lied

I have an '07 purchased in February and it just started making the noise

I guess I should wait to call the dealer and make an appointment until the new redesigned part is available.
Thanks for all the info on here because as soon as I started to feel the rattle throught he gas pedal I knew what it was. I noticed it getting worse the more I drive so hope that new part is available real soon.

wow, very interesting. i didnt think there would be this many w/ the same problem. im just glad people are reading about this...and that i'm not alone

. not sure how much water this explanation holds, but the service guy at sewell told me that warmer weather seems to be a factor...something about the metal heating up and expanding, hence why its getting worse. doesn't make sense to me, but i just crunch numbers for a living. also, he said there wouldn't be a recall as its not a safety issue, but that there would most likely be a TSB (if there's not already)...which, of course, is good news for anyone that has this problem later on.
so far, no issues w/ the new-old shaft (?) please keep me posted on when you guys get your redesigns.
good luck!

I think it would be interesting if people would post their build dates when they are having problems.
