I agree, my opinion only a real el Cheapo would change their own oil nowadays, unless they have plenty of time on their hands or an old car, or far far away to a dealer. With a new purchase the prices nowadays are so low it is well worth changing it at a shop. I am glad I do not have to worry about this, they gave the 2 year free oil changes and tire rotations package because of my ordeal with DVD hehe, but I still would have gone do the daler and paid their price if I did not get it.

Who are you calling an el cheapo?? I use SYNTHETIC OIL which a dealer is not going to change for $30. Furthermore my dealer is well over 100 miles away. I started this thread too.

maybe u should read the thread again, then you will know the answer. And I believe the dealer uses Synthetic for their oil changes, I am pretty sure that's what the guy told me.

Hey it under warranty if anything happens it is the dealers problem but also if something goes wrong and you change your own oil they have no record of it so they will blame you for the problem saying you have not change it enough they always try to get out of it thats one reason i let the dealer do it .It's all on there records.
But if you live that far away it's not worth it do it yourself or find a local shop and keep the receipts.

I completely agree, actually if you change yourself it will always be blamed on you. Worst case scenario have a shop in your aread do it and stamp your service book and keep receipt

I wrote this thread. I don't see a dealer changing the oil for $30 and it's synthetic.

Howdy all...1st post.

I thought this would be a good place to start....This is the H3 forum, right?

I've been driving cars for 36 years now and pretty much a DIYer.. I have never, I mean NEVER, let some grease monkey change my own oil..As long as I'm able to crawl under the car and do it myself, I will continue to do so...It offers many benifits..1. Exercise, 2. The chance to learn YOUR vehicle, 3. The chance to look things over underneath for leaks, problems before they get too far along, 4. Pride of accomplishment in a job well done...And you know when you're done, that everything was put back together right without any shortcuts and lost parts due to half-ass work.

Having said that..
I have always used OEM filters and Castrol Oils...Every car I have ever owned (most from New) I've used Castrol and never had any engine problems of any kind...I have also witnessed many people who have used Mobil 1 and ended up with OIL LEAKS, i.e., seals, and/or excessive oil consumption. I once used Mobil 1 in a Toyota Supra I had (from New), it didn't leak any, but sure burned away a quart every 1000 miles, then when I went back to Castrol the consumption stopped...Suit yourselves..But I speak from experience.

This current H3 I now own is going to be no different (BTW, I love it)...Researching this car's needs, I have found that the engine is already pre-broke in..And that the OIL CHANGE clock is set to remind you at 7500 miles of when the oil change is due....I will change my oil (just because I'm anal), at 1000 miles, then every 3000 miles there after with CASTROL SYNTEC 5w30..The owners manual (yes, there is one in the glove box believe it or not) explains very clearly how to RESET this OIL CHANGE clock...It recommends that you do this at each oil change, regardless of the time frame you use, so as to not get the DIC notice, that is, if these sort of informational read-outs annoy you.

I hope to have many happy miles of motoring pleasure with this H3. I look forward to bantering the pro-cons of HUMMER ownership here and will post here often to help with the DIY's as I am.

WELL SAID. The purpose of this thread was to help others from my experience, not to get flamed.

Don't worry Greg..I'm here to help too..I'm a Moderator on two other automobile forums over the past 4 years and I don't stand for ignorant flaming for no reason at all...I will fight fire with fire though!

1110 Miles

Just did my first OIL and FILTER change today...It took exactly 6.25 qts. with FILTER...This is one of the easiest cars I've ever changed oil on..I like the little drip pan for the oil filter too...Cute!

(TIP; If you do it yourself, make sure you fill the new FILTER with OIL before you install it...Plus, don't forget to reset the 'CHANGE OIL CLOCK' on your DIC, Owner's Manual page 5-17)

FILTER = $5.95
7 qts. of OIL = $34.93, @$4.99/qt. of Castrol Syntec 5w30

Total = $40.88
The exercise and chance to learn the underneath of this fine Machine and Polish the Skid pans....Priceless

In case anyone is interested
1. All you need is a 13MM socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet.
2. Band type Filter wrench.
3. Oil catch pan.
4. 6 pack of cool ones.
5. 1 Cuban cigar

I was taught many years ago how to change oil by the fine folks at the motor pool at Kaneohe Bay. One of those things they required before I could get my 1 1/4 ton license to drive HMMWV's. I learned I don't like getting under cars, getting my hands greasy and dirty, my getting dirty. I haven't changed oil in anything for years. And I've learned that when I'm on a road trip to wear a miniskirt and I don't have to change a flat tire either. It's well worth whatever I have to pay someone else to do it. I wish I was one of those folks that was mechanically inclined and loved them doohickeys under the hood. I'll wash, polish, wax, vacuum, treat the leather, and polish the chrome. Someone else can do the dirty work.

I just got my oil cahnged in my Chevy work truck and Valvoline OIl change. To reset the computer they had me turn the key 2 clicks forward and press the gas 3 times with in 5 seconds.
Does that sound like that would work for the Hummer? Probably a GM thing?
Otherwise I think our manual will have it in there, I'll have to take a look.

This is what I did, and it worked. Even though it is different than what the manual says to do.
