There has been a much to do (about nothing IMO) about how over oiling a K & N or other oiled gauze air filter can impact your MAF sensor.  So I started this thread for some intelligent debate regarding this issue of a non-issue so real life experiences from our members may be examined to myth bust this mess.

As you are all aware   K&N is a HummerForums sponsor, but do not let that sway your input on this topic.  BTW I do not want opinions from someone who has never used a K&N/ any other oiled gauze based air filter profounding to espouse knowledge on the topic.  I would like any member with any computor controlled vehicle (preferrably Hummer, but any will do for this discussion) with a MAF who is using or has used a oiled gauze air filter to share their experience and observations please.

I figure most of the chimers in will be from the 3 crowd, so let me start.

Let us first assume that over oiling is agreed to be not good!  I will refer to K&N, only because that is the type of air filter in question that I have used to date.  As to the 06/07 H3 it would also appear that there are possibly just 4 filters available beyond OEM (K&N; Airaide; Fram and Green * Green is dry I believe)  if there are more, include them in this thread so we can have a full list

Some prior threads on various filters' efficiencies:  air filter study info  more babbling on this subject  RE: difference betwen stock filter & K&N filter  and, an alternative or the same old thing RE: New Fram Washable "SynWash" air filter - How is it?

I do not believe in my experince that the over oiling concern is regarding a new out of the box K&N, but more concernes the average Joe who after using the K&N decides to clean it with the K&N recharger pack (cleaner and filter oil) and does not follow the instructions to a T or is over zelous with the reapplication of filter oil.

I have been using K&N in everything since the 1970s, and never had any problem, and none with any post 1990s computer controlled vehicles, not one!  My 3 has been running the canister K&N in the stoick box for 10K miles, checked the MAF last week and clean as a whistle.  Throttle body was dirty, so I did some cleaning.
Suprise, throttle plate cleaner to..................clean throttle plates, throttle body and intake, who'd a thunk?
With this MAF sensor cleaner, even HummerGuy can spray clean the MAF in his 3!   You can do it by simply opening the box, taking off the filter and spritzing in, or taking the intake system off the filter box and sprayin back into the box with the filter off, or just remove the sensor and spray.  Done.  So why the hoobla about an over oil MAF problem whem my kids could easily spray it clean everytime I clean/recharge my filter, or as often as I need to avoid loosing sleep over this topic??

Outstanding....I've been thinking about an upgrade so this thread should prove very useful.

Thanks.

Can we extend this other issues with K&N kits?

OK, sure.  If you run a K&N kit or oiled gauze filter, check in and let us know whether you have any issue or not.

If you have either and have had no issues, just post what you have, how many miles you have been running it, and all is good.  Thanks for your input.

I installed one on my 1993 Ford Bronco 351 V-8.

The design was poor, fitment was even worse.  I had to pull green stick off of my service van to even get the plastic tube to fit the TB.  It was very difficult to install the hose clamps also.  The bracket that goes off of the A/C fit awful and I spent time modifying it as well.

I think I spent a told of 6 hours installing something that is supposed to be a 1 hour install to someone with simple hand tools... not 6 hours by a professional mechanic.

I installed one on a 1997 LT-1 Z28.  It relocated the filter for "Cold air".. which is actually code for water sucker.  Thankfully I caught this before it sucked too much water and did damage.  This was my last straw with them.  I had heard the "Rumors" and the "Myths".  I decided to put in a coffee filter and see what gets by.  I was suprised at just how fuzzy the filter was after a weekend.

The stories are out there.  Popo just had his off and on in a weekend because of the poor design.  Co-workers have worked on them after the civics and neons sucked up water.

I don't have anything against the company personally...  I have never had a piece of my equipment damaged by them...  but I will never own another one of them.

I am a fan of their filters, the kits................uh..., not so much?

The list of vehicles post 1990 which I immediately installed a K&N filter as soon as available and miles driven without any air/fuel delivery problems:
1991 GMC Sonoma 4X4 66K miles;
1993 Ford F150 4X4 19K miles;
1993 Ford Taurus 60K miles;
1994 Pontiac Grand Prix 109K miles;
1995 GMC Jimmy 4X4  167K miles;
1998 Pontiac GTP 66k miles;
2002 Pontiac GTP 38K miles;
2005 Chrysler Pacifica 17K miles;
2007 H3 10K miles.

That is a lot of miles?

Yep, exciting thread to be sure.

Even IK, who has a K&N is silenced?      Guess nobody here has a K&N air filter?  Could just check in and say all is good.......

'94 Toyota 4-Runner SR5 - OK, no problems

'95 Camaro 3.4L V6 - Over-oiled from factory, ruined MAF, replaced

'99 Isuzu Rodeo LS - Over-oiled from factory, caught before it ruined MAF, washed and re-oiled, no problems after that

'03 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo S - OK, no problems

'06 Scion xB - VERY over-oiled from the factory, but knew about the issue so checked frequently, removed a think layer of oil scum from the MAF resisters with alcohol and a q-tip.  It had about 10k to 15k on the filter use.

'06 Hummer H3 - Over-oiled, had thin layer of grease on the resisters on the MAF.  Re-oiled and since then no oil residue on the MAF resistors.

Anybody that says they aren't over-oiled is just lucky they never got one that was. After 6 cars of them and a 50% over-oil rate, I may or may not stick with it after the 50k mile mark, and try the newer dry high performance filters out now.

And, thanks for your vote of confidence Doc that I can use an aerosol can

Airraid filter. Cleaned, oiled once, no issues with overoiling. Or, I should say that I have not noticed any issues like a rough engine or check engine light. I have not looked inside to see any potential harm

Don't call me lucky fella.

Airaid makes a good filter, out performs K&N in many applications.
